How to use DNS with a Plesk server

Using DNS with a Plesk server involves several steps to ensure that domain names are correctly resolved to their associated IP addresses. Here's a guide to help you set up and manage DNS on a Plesk server:

  1. Access Plesk Control Panel:

    • Log in to your Plesk control panel.
  2. Add a Domain:

    • If you haven't already, add the domain for which you want to manage DNS. Go to "Websites & Domains" > "Add Domain" and follow the prompts.
  3. Set Up DNS Hosting:

    • By default, Plesk configures DNS for domains added through its interface. It sets up DNS zones, including the necessary records.
  4. View DNS Zones:

    • To view and manage the DNS zones for a domain, go to "Websites & Domains" > [Select Domain] > "DNS Settings."
  5. Edit DNS Records:

    • You can add, edit, or delete DNS records for the domain from the DNS Settings page. Common record types include A (address), CNAME (canonical name), MX (mail exchange), TXT (text), etc.
  6. Create Subdomains:

    • If needed, create subdomains from "Websites & Domains" > [Select Domain] > "Add Subdomain." Plesk will automatically set up DNS records for them.
  7. Manage MX Records:

    • Go to "Websites & Domains" > [Select Domain] > "Mail Settings" to manage the MX records for email routing.
  8. Set Up Domain Forwarding:

    • If you want to forward a domain to another URL, go to "Websites & Domains" > [Select Domain] > "Hosting Settings" > "Forwarding."
  9. Manage Reverse DNS (PTR Records):

    • PTR records are typically managed by your hosting provider. If you need to set up reverse DNS, contact your provider.
  10. Manage DNS Templates:

    • You can create custom DNS templates in Plesk. Go to "Tools & Settings" > "DNS Template."
  11. Enable or Disable DNS Service:

    • If for some reason you want to disable DNS service for a specific domain, you can do so from "Websites & Domains" > [Select Domain] > "Hosting Settings."
  12. Check DNS Propagation:

    • After making DNS changes, it might take some time for them to propagate across the internet. You can use online tools to check the current DNS records for your domain.
  13. Monitor DNS Health:

    • Regularly monitor your DNS settings to ensure they remain accurate and resolve correctly. You can also set up notifications for DNS-related issues.
  14. Consider External DNS:

    • If you prefer to use external DNS services, you can do so by changing the DNS settings at your domain registrar and managing DNS records directly with your chosen DNS provider.

Remember that making changes to DNS settings can have a significant impact on website and email functionality, so always double-check your configurations before saving. If in doubt, seek advice from a system administrator or your hosting provider.
